Frequently Asked Questions
My yard holds standing water after rain - what can you do?
Standing water in North Georgia is almost always caused by grade draining toward your structure instead of away, high clay content soil that sheds water rather than absorbing it, or a blocked or inadequate outlet. We assess the site and correct the root cause - through regrading, French drain installation, swale construction, or a combination of all three.
What is the difference between a French drain and a surface swale?
A French drain is a buried perforated pipe surrounded by gravel that intercepts water underground and redirects it to a lower outlet. A swale is a graded channel on the surface that captures and directs sheet flow. French drains work best for subsurface water near foundations; swales handle large volumes of surface runoff. Most problem drainage sites need both.
Can poor drainage damage my foundation in North Georgia red clay?
Yes - and it is one of the most common causes of foundation problems in the region. Red clay expands significantly when wet and shrinks when dry, causing seasonal movement that cracks slabs and shifts footings. Water pooling against a foundation also creates hydrostatic pressure that forces moisture into basements and crawl spaces. Correcting drainage early is almost always cheaper than foundation repair later.
